- Discovery & appearance: First described in 1852, the Harlequin Shrimp has a white body with large light blue spots; males are slightly smaller than females and its large claws are for display, not hunting.
- Species distinction: It differs from its close relative H. picta (Hawaiian Harlequin Shrimp), which has purple and red spots.
- Aquarium requirements: Best kept as mated pairs with moderate lighting; highly sensitive to copper, high nitrates, and improper iodine levels needed for molting.
- Specialized diet: Feeds exclusively on echinoderms—primarily starfish and some sea urchins.
- Feeding behavior & care: Consumes starfish by starting at arm tips and moving inward; requires a steady supply of starfish (e.g., Asterias rubens for adults, Linckia for juveniles).
